The Town

Brief history of Falmouth

Falmouth received its Royal charter in 1661, following the end of the Civil War and the reinstatement of the Monarchy.

The Town rapidly developed after this because of its unique location to open sea and the burgeoning trading routes from the UK & Northern Europe to the rest of the World.

The Falmouth Packet shipping service, which ran for some 160 years, transformed the town into a substantial international trading port and centre of learning… a priceless heritage which forms the foundation for today’s Falmouth.

Falmouth today

Today, Falmouth is the largest town in the district and is a vibrant centre for:

  • Business…especially marine and tourism related
  • Recreation….a stunning harbour for sailing & watersports, beaches, coastline, countryside and a historic town centre.
  • Education and learning…award winning schools, University College Falmouth, Falmouth Marine School and world class facilities such as ‘the Poly’ (Falmouth Polytechnic) and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.

It is also an ideal base for access to other parts of Cornwall and the Southwest.

Future Falmouth

Falmouth is capitalising upon its rich heritage, priceless natural environment and the huge talents of its residents, to take the town forward into the Future. This involves sensitive regeneration, whilst celebrating the best of the past and utilising the developing sense of purpose and ‘can do’ approach amongst the town’s community & other communities in neighbouring areas.
