Church Street

This area is home to many interesting and historic buildings such as the Poly Arts Centre, St George’s Arcade and King Charles the Martyr Church. Here, high street brands meet eclectic independent shops. There are numerous cellars under the road that may have been used for storage – or were they hiding places for smugglers?

Alfred Nobel demonstrated nitro‐glycerine for the first time anywhere in the world in the Poly in 1865, earning the Society a mention on the Nobel Prize website.
