A&P and Australia
Supporting the Australian Royal Navy
Sydney-based Atlantic and Peninsula Australia was established to deliver the first In Service Support (ISS) contract of its kind with the Australian Government for the ongoing support and maintenance of HMAS Choules – formerly the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Largs Bay.
Founded on the skills, capabilities and learnings of A&P Falmouth in the UK, the Australian business is now an industry-leading ship repairer, specialising in the engineering and asset management of defence and commercial marine assets in particular.
Well placed to support visiting vessels from G7 and D10 countries thanks to its Sydney base, Atlantic and Peninsula Australia makes a significant contribution to the country’s sovereign shipbuilding capability as it employs 70 and supports a diverse supply chain.
The significance of the ISS contract cannot be overstated for Atlantic & Peninsula Australia or the country – as the team provides the support required to keep this important bay class landing vessel operational.
Thanks to A&P’s work during the vessel’s annual maintenance period (AMP) in 2019, it was possible to deploy HMAS Choules quickly during the devastating Australia bush fires of 2020. A&P’s work had included the complete refurbishment of the galley – which enabled the accommodation of more than 1,000 evacuees and the provision of 4,000 meals during a 20-hour rescue period.
Scott Wiley, Managing Director of Atlantic & Peninsula Australia said: “Knowing we played our part in ensuring Choules was ready to help during one of this country’s worst natural disasters, makes us very proud. It also highlights the importance and value of partnerships between industry and government to provide maintenance and support for these important vessels.”
Atlantic & Peninsula Australia’s contribution to HMAS Choules attracted praise from the Australian Government’s Department of Defence. Vice Admiral Michael Joseph Noonan AO, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy said: “Atlantic & Peninsula Australia’s support to the ADF contribution in this significant and challenging national endeavour has been excellent and a true representation of a transformational partnership in action. Our appreciation of your company’s efforts cannot be overstated.”
