La Péniche
La Péniche
Bobbing in the North Quay is La Péniche, a lovingly restored 1930s French barge providing a truly unique dining experience. Owners, Tony and Kate Ellicott-Cannon, sailed the vessel over from Chalon-sur-Saône in Burgundy and spent three years prepping to provide Falmouth with the only fine dining restaurant where every seat has a harbour view.
The barge was initially named ‘Raymond’ and was built at the Mourlon family Boatyard in the village of Pierre le Treiche, near Nancy. During the Second World War, she was requisitioned by the German army and was later found in the port of Genoa, Italy. No one knows what she was up to during those years and we can only imagine the stories she’d tell.
Serving today as a floating restaurant, La Péniche is open from noon and serves dishes like Moules Marinieres, Beef bourguignon and Tonka bean Crème brûlée – all made with love, using local produce from land and sea.
Owner – Anthony Ellicott-Cannon – says, “The G7 Summit is a marvellous opportunity to showcase how stunning Cornwall is and to highlight everything that we have to offer. My wife, Kate, and I met here in 1988 and have since travelled extensively around the world; however, this place holds a magnetic draw and we kept returning time and time again. With its rich maritime history, Falmouth is the perfect place for our 1838 French restaurant barge and we feel blessed that we have received such amazing support from Falmouth Town Council and the local population. In addition, the town’s proximity to the sea provide us with fantastic availability and variety of local produce from both land and sea – we even have local fishermen deliver directly from their boats and onto ours!”
