The hotel with sustainability and people at its heart
Budock Vean is a 4-star country house hotel sitting on the Helford River just south of Falmouth in Cornwall. Its private grounds cover around 65 acres and include golf course, parkland and sub-tropical gardens which lead down to a private foreshore on the Helford River. This is a family run hotel with friendly, high quality service and sustainability at its heart.
Privately owned by the Barlow family since 1987 the hotel has been under the watchful eye of Martin Barlow since 2000 when he took the reins from his mother and father. This family approach is nothing new to Budock Vean which has been independently run as a hotel for just shy of 90 years.
Fresh from their recent wins at the Cornwall and the SouthWest tourism awards, the hotel continues to drive its sustainability programme forward. Over the last 10 years the hotel has strived to be at the forefront of 21st Century eco-requirements and new environmental technologies have been introduced sensitively and respectfully. From biomass boilers which provide the majority of heating and hot water for the site which significantly reduces dependency on fossil fuels, to kitchen composting; from electric car charging points to organically managed gardens the Budock Vean Hotel has proved its eco-credentials time and time again gaining the International Green Tourism Business Scheme’s highest accolade of a Gold Award.
Other initiatives include a major investment in LEDs inside and outside, an investment which has helped cut electricity costs and a Heatsaver pool cover, inverter controls for pumps and low flow showers.
“Over the years our family and the Budock Vean team has been determined to be as environmentally friendly as we conceivably can, both inside and out,” says Martin Barlow. “On every level it makes sense to invest in green technology, it reduces our footprint, reduces our long term outgoings and, of course, it is absolutely the right thing to do.”
