Inspire Makers
Inspire Makers is a creative hub showcasing the work of over 50 local Cornish artists and makers. There is also a gallery area for short term art exhibitions, a workshop space for classes to get people creating, and my own jewellery studio. All housed in a fully refurbished Grade II listed building.
Inspire Makers is a small business supporting and championing small creative businesses, many of whom use sustainable materials or are on a determined journey to a fully sustainable operation. Each artist or maker represents a different style or technique within their craft to highlight the vast diversity of creative expression possible through the individual development and application of skills and use of materials.
After 25 years in high street retail I have witnessed first-hand the race to the bottom on price, the rise of the disposable/throwaway culture, and the decimation of the high street as we know it.
I believe the way back for retail is to focus on local communities, local businesses, and well-made long lasting goods – mindful and sustainable shopping if you will. Art and creativity is also excellent for well-being.
I opened my doors in June 2020 in the midst of the Covid pandemic and have been heartened by the sea change in people’s attitude to spending. It is wonderful to see the connection customers make with locally made, handcrafted product, either through appreciating the workmanship, as a memento of Cornwall, or the story of the artist. Each artist is fully promoted with their story so people can understand what goes into their craft. I know that most purchases will be treasured for a long time.
Just a few examples of environmentally sustainable work include:
- Smartie Lids on the Beach – art made from beach plastic
- Washed & Found – jewellery made by setting sea plastic found on Cornish and Devon beaches in resin
- Sarah Drew – Jewellery made from found materials and recycled “eco-silver”
- Porth Jewellery – jewellery made from seaglass found on Cornish beaches
- The Hide Studio – wooden bowls made from driftwood, sustainable sources or local remnants from furniture making
