Falmouth celebrated its independent businesses for Independents’ Day 2025

Falmouth’s vibrant high street was highlighted earlier this month as the town came together to celebrate Independents’ Day UK, a national campaign dedicated to championing the unique and vital role of independent businesses in local communities. Taking place over the weekend of 4th – 5th July 2025, with activities running throughout the week in Falmouth from 2nd – 9th July, the event showcased the heart and soul of the towns’ economy, its independently owned shops, galleries, cafes and studios. With over 75% of businesses in the town centre independently owned, Falmouth stands out nationally for its entrepreneurial spirit and strong community values. The Independents’ Day campaign provided the perfect platform to celebrate this remarkable local landscape, where creativity and individuality thrive.

Seven independent businesses took part in this year’s campaign, sharing their stories through Instagram takeovers, ‘Meet the Maker’ videos, and in-store events. Locals and visitors alike were given the chance to connect with the people behind the businesses and discover the passion and purpose that drives them.

The Oystercatcher

A lifestyle store on Church Street, The Oystercatcher showcased its curated collection of homeware, original artwork, and coastal-inspired gifts. Owners Sarah and Brendan shared their journey from a Devon tearoom to establishing their successful Falmouth business.

Salt Art Supply

Founded by Falmouth University graduates Rhianna Fowler and Nyassa Hinde, Salt Art Supply brought its artistic ethos to the spotlight. The store, which opened in 2023, is already known for its high-quality, sustainable materials and supportive atmosphere for local creatives.

Castle Sports and Uniform

Run by Cath Horton and Teresa McCormack, Castle Sports and Uniform has become a reliable name for school uniforms and sports gear. During the campaign, they highlighted their close ties to the community and their commitment to quality and service.

Inspire Makers

Inspire Makers, located on the historic High Street, celebrated the region’s rich culture of handmade craftsmanship. Founder Vicki Glaister used the campaign to showcase the work of local designers and makers, while also promoting the store’s creative workshops and community ethos.

Pebble Cornwall

Zoe Groom’s boutique on Church Street demonstrated its dedication to timeless fashion and personalised service. During Independents’ Day, Pebble Cornwall reflected on the value of thoughtful design and building lasting relationships with customers.

Sophie Tilston

Designer Sophie Tilston opened the doors of her Arwenack Street shop to highlight her nostalgic, coastal-inspired homewares. Her hand-crafted lampshades and textiles told a story of tradition and creativity rooted in the local landscape.

Southpaw Dog Store

Desney Ryan’s Church Street pet store gave customers a behind-the-scenes look at her carefully curated range of dog products and the passion that fuels her mission to support canine health and wellbeing.

The Independents’ Day celebration was more than just a campaign, it was a reminder of the power of local. By shining a light on the hardworking individuals behind the shopfronts, Falmouth once again affirmed its reputation as a town full of creativity, community spirit and independent flair, we look forward to continuing to shine a light on our amazing independent businesses.
